matias aguayo
Tribal, danceable, minimal. These three words mean good sounds. Matias Aguayo, on Kompakt, is all three, obviously, or that would have been a terrible way to open a blog post. I discovered, in finding new tracks, that various tracks I’d enjoyed and moved on from, were all by him.
There’s a track on Kompakt 6, then Menta Latte, and now these two. I’d loved them all, and never registered the name properly. He lives between Buenos Aires and Paris, and has a project called Broke! with Marcus Rossknecht. The South American influence shows, not least in Leroto’s vocal on Pata Pata , but in the Baile funk edge too. It’s food for my post ATP ears, which have been ransacked by sheer drones and intense frequencies for the last few months, and starved of distinguishable rhythm.
Pata Pata is bad. It’s got bounce, and a dark side in the deep rippling beats. Rollerskate has some really juicy doop-doop harmonies, with this sweaty, dripping, rolling rhythm, which also bounces, like a peachy lady’s ass. Most notably though, it’s made of vox (as is Menta Latte). All the sounds are made of vocals! Looped and layered, making duff-doosh sounds for the drums, and whistling beeps and bloops for the synths. I love it. It’s dinky, catchy, and the subtle difference really gives it a human edge.
Get me some music to bounce my peachy ass to.
