i got the rage and listened to boris

February 10th, 2009

Today, I got The Rage. I could not stave off the rage with shoe shopping or a pretty dress, so I came back to Boris – mad grinding stoner rock. Specifically, I came back to Heavy Rocks - one of their most enthusiastically bludgeoning rock records from about 2002.

What’s curious is the language gap; testosterone fuelled exclamations remain intense but anonymous, losing an element of seriousness because I don’t know what mountains of doom or skeletal saviours of the apocalypse are being referred to. This mightn’t be what theyre talking about – but I have no idea what they’re trying to be serious about, and assume it’s probably silly. (Which does not prevent my enjoyment in any way).

If it’s as excessively brutal as the instrumentation and drawling insistence of the vocal stylings, then it is definitely silly, but all the better for cohering with the rest of the maniacal movements. Not convinced? Try these:

Boris – Koei

Boris – Korosu

Boris are one of those prolific bands, who collaborate and create at impossible speed. They’ve made records with their mates Merzbow, Keiji Haino (the splendidly titled Black: Implication Flooding) and Sun O))), and others too, so they can be hard to get to grips with – each individual record can mislead as to the rest of their output. Generally however, they posses a vital intensity, usually of some brutal or heavy sort. The massively overlooked Second Layer records on the right hand list will bestow most Boris wares upon you.
