hold on
Played this at Club Pony last week and god, did it sound good on a proper system. Along with Excepter’s “The Punjab” which I posted a couple of weeks back, big speakers really brought out all the layers. After discovering some ropey quality versions of this circulating cyberspace, I decided to put things right and rip it into 320kbps glory.
There will be more posts on Romanthony in the future, as his 2000 record R Hide In Plain Site is one of the all-time inexplicably neglected albums and will get a frothy treatment on these pages at some point. But for now, “Hold On” is like Boyz2Men playing the disco at a self-help retreat - soulful harmonising blended with straight up house music, closed-eyes guitar soloing and extremely generic but completely affecting lyrics. It was originally self-released in 1994, and then rereleased in 1999 on Thomas Bangalter’s Roule label, before collaborating with Bangalter on only the greatest dance record of all time, Daft Punk’s “One More Time”.
And here’s the even-more-Boyz2Men R’n'B remix:
